Behind the Lens, Beyond the Man: notes from my Becoming
There comes a moment in every man’s life when he realizes he is becoming someone he never had.
For me, that moment didn’t arrive all at once. It unfolded across years—across mistakes, hard-won lessons, quiet victories, challenges survived, and truths uncovered behind a camera lens. I’ve spent fifty years on this earth, more than two decades in business, and I’ve lived long enough to see entire industries rise, collapse, and rebuild themselves in real time. When I started, blogs were brand-new. There were no mentors who had built a life from digital news. No one who could guide a young Black man trying to make a way through storytelling, media, and entrepreneurship.
So I had to become for myself what I didn’t have—and now, I’m trying to become that for someone else.
AI has changed everything with the speed of a rocket ship. My company is evolving. Our mission is evolving. Our entire ecosystem is stretching toward new markets, new models, and new possibilities. And somewhere inside all of that… I am evolving too. I am finding myself in new rooms, speaking to new people, sitting at new tables, navigating new challenges—and discovering new parts of myself along the way.
This is why Field Notes exists.
These are not just scattered thoughts or random reflections. These are the things I wish someone had told me when I began. The lessons I paid for. The wisdom I earned the long way around. The perspectives that shaped me. The philosophies still revealing themselves. The self-interrogations. The lamentations. The quiet reckonings with myself. The truth I’ve wrestled with, examined, questioned, and lived through.
And I am laying them bare here.
Because someone coming behind me might need what I never had. Someone might read these words and save themselves time, pain, or confusion. Someone might use these pages as a compass to make their own journey more efficient, more informed, more purposeful.
Field Notes is my journal of becoming—my record of a journey of evolution.
A chronicle of 20 years behind the lens.
A reflection of a man, a storyteller, and a builder who has been shaped by every room he entered and every trial he survived.
This is my work.
My truth.
My offering.
Use it. Study it. Question it. Interrogate it.
If there is any value in these notes, let it be that my evolution becomes a light for yours.
